Profile Information

About Me:
Basic Roots Community Foods is a business model to grow farmers. We make a trip to the farmers market appear on people's door (home or work), YEAR ROUND. We've been operating since December of 2005.
Basic Roots Community Foods is a seasonal based once a month year-round local (and regional) sustainably produced food delivery service. Each deliver consists of what is available from our farmer network the week of the delivery. We emphasize variety, quality and nutrition in our purchases. We also provide a nutritionist penned newsletter (with recipes) accompanied by a "menu" to guide you through your bag of goodies!

During the outside growing seasons Basic Roots makes monthly deliveries of mostly fresh produce and eggs. Our dollars don't go as far in the winter, but we manage to acquire fresh greens grown (in hoop houses) in central Indiana all winter long (barring calamity).

For those of you who haven't tasted Basic Roots winter selections, here are some of the products you can look forward to... fresh greens, hot house veggies, seasonal produce & eggs with additional grains, canned goods, nuts, frozen fruits, frozen entrees, cheese, butter, yogurt & more to round out your variety. All from sustainable local & regional farmers that we know & trust.

Value added goods direct from farmers are pricey when you pay fair prices. Basic Roots strives to maintain value for our members, stellar quality, freshness and variety while keeping our farmers growing.

So what does it take to get a trip to the farmers market to show up at your door (work or home in Indianapolis area)?

Winter
"Whole package" - $75.00 includes the same extra ordinary variety as the summer orders, newsletter, recipes and special purchases!

"Half package" - $50.00 includes the same fabulous variety as a summer delivery with smaller portions, the newsletter, and recipes.

"Deluxe Upgrade" - $30.00 -- local meat or vegatarian options added to either "package"

Summer
A FULL member pays $55 a delivery and receives a grocery bag of produce and product.
A HALF member pays $40 a delivery and receives half of what a FULL member receives (usually missing the rare and most expensive items). We recommend to those contemplating a half share to find a cohort to split the bounty!

Deluxe it for an Additional $30.

You pay at time of delivery (tips for driver are appreciated). There is NO membership fee or binding contract beyond "you're 'in' until you say you're 'out' and you're 'out' until you say you're 'in'."

Vegetarians and Members with allergies must alert us to their needs so we can respect them. Otherwise, members receive what our farmers have to sell.

We announce the next delivery date in the newsletter with your delivery. We send an e-mail reminder about a week before the delivery.

Saturday morning we take a final count of our members and finalize our orders with our farmers. Tuesday and Wedneday (morning) we gather our purchases. Wednesday (afternoon) we divide the group purchases into individual member sacks. By late afternoon Wednesday and again on Thursday we're visiting members at their home or office!

Home deliveries while you're at work is just a matter of remembering to set out your cooler with your payment and freezer pack (during warmer weather) inside.

Every delivery is different, even if that means a different Heirloom sweet corn two deliveries in a row. Quantity fluctuates with nature--more in times of plenty, a little less in lean times. Luckily we have a good working relationship with over one hundred central Indiana farmers, plus more within 250 miles. We pay fair prices for our purchases! We even have farmers planting our own "Kids in Bloom" Heirloom seeds to purchase the crop for our members each year.

By joining our group you are directly supporting your local food chain of sustainable growers. You position yourself one step away from your food provider while carving thousands of miles off of your carbon foot print.
