Snake skins

Its been awhile. I've been trying to keep alive what I have in my own eco space. This summer drought has really taught me how creation takes care of herself.

Some go into hibernation. Some dormancy. and some just die. Although its sad to see something you've cultured over the years die, you also realize that your not alone in this world. And you are not the center of it either.

I was out in the back yard with my dog Max. it was our regular routine after supper, pee and poop.…

May 31, 2012 Vistation

"Listen, my faithful children;open up your petals, like roses planted near running waters; send up the sweet odor of incense;break forth in blossoms like the lily." (Sirach 39:13-16a)

This is one of the readings from the Office for the feast of the Visitation. In the RC and Anglican traditions we honor the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth.

For some reason I love this reading. Its in the Office of the Blessed Virgin, a set of readings set aside to be used along with the…

May 28th 2012 Rose pedal project!

This spring  I did something I have always wanted to do. That is to make beads out of my rose pedals!

I am a rose addict! I admit I am powerless over this! Each year when plant catalogues come through the mail in the cold of winter, I look first to see if there are any roses. THEN I look at the others.

Roses have been around millions of years. Fossils exist from that time period. I have seen them and they look like -roses. I would like to think in the garden of Eden they…

May 16th 2012

"And the land shall enjoy its sabboth years as long as it it lies desolate, while you are in the land of you enemies; then the land shall rest and enjoy its sabboth years. As long as it lies desolate, it shall have the rest it did not have on your sabbaths, when you were living on it." Leviticus 34-36

This was part of todays readings from morning prayer. It kinda struck me off balance. The reading is talking about the devastation the children of Israel will receive if they do not…

May 11th 2012

"On either side of the river grew the trees of life which produce fruit twelve times a year, once each month; their leaves serve as medicine for the nations." (Revelation 22:1-9)

As I read this reading for morning prayer(office of readings) I thought how odd for this to be in the book. After all the gloom and destruction of the earth and her inhabitants this pops up!

If I recall this in the book of Genesis after God created the plants and etc, I thing he actually said "be…

Monday May 7, 2012 "A good heart"

"What is this new earth?  A good heart, a heart like the earth, which drinks up the rain that falls on it and yields a rich harvest." From a sermon by Saint Gregory of Nyssa, bishop

In the cycle of the church the days following the resurrection of Christ is a series of readings. Usually you read the whole book of Revelation maybe the Acts of the Apostles.

Personally of all the books in the bible I find this one rather strange and bizarre. Rather scary, everything is judged no…

"Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord." (Daniel 3: 57-88, 56) "All praise be yours, my Lord through Sister Earth, our mother, who feeds us in her sovereignty and produces various fruits with colored flowers and herbs."(Saint Francis of Assisi)

In the daily office, Sundays are devoted to the canticle of Daniel. I say it almost each and every Sunday. And when you pray the office sometimes you simply do that say it. Prayer comes last sometimes. Its very difficult at times to "pray"…

Isaiah 61:10-62:5

"As the earth brings forth its plants, and a garden makes its growth spring up, so will the Lord God make justice and praise spring up before all the nations"

I sometimes forget the beauty of creation. I read and hear much on conservation etc. But I forget the healing that creation provides us.

Daily I attend meetings with parents struggling with children of depression, anxiety, and simply stresses of life. And not just children adults as well.

Creation has been…

May 1. Saint Joseph "The Lord God put man in the garden of Eden to cultivate the garden and care for it"

Today is the feast of Saint Joseph the worker. In the Roman church its a time to reflect on work. He is patron of workers.

You may wonder what does this have to do with the creation.

"It is clear, then, that the Christian message does not deflect men from building up of the world, or encourage them to neglect the good of their fellowmen, bur rather places on them a stricter obligation to work for these objectives"(From the pastoral constitution on the Church in the modern…

April 7th, Holy Saturday

Gensis 2:1-3

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation.

Levititucs 25: ... but in the seventh year there shall be a sabboth of complete rest for the land..

Today the liturgy is about "rest". Of…

Back and runing

Was on a retreat last week at Victory Noll in Huntington. It was a very refreshing one, helped me to gain some relaxation and strength.

Also able this weekend to spend some time in the garden as well. So I will be adding more to my blog latter this week. Pax

Espoused

"...but you shall be called "My delight,"and your land "Espoused" Isaiah 61:10-62:5

I have never thought of land being espoused? Espoused basically mean to some extent "promised" equivalent to "betrothed"

Married to your land? How often do I think of creation in these terms? Do I really see the land as something special to me, desirable?, And what is my part in it? Am I a good partner to the land?

How often that age old "I am the center of the universe" comes to play.…

Happy Thanksgiving from Renee

Happy Thanksgiving to all my virtual friends who take a few minutes out of your day twice a week to spend time with me. I’m grateful for you and your efforts to live green!

As you begin to prepare for the next month — which is also the most wasteful [...]

Shop green!

Hi Renee,

I’m interested in buying with less packaging and products made from recycled materials. What can you suggest?

Thanks!

Donna

Hi Donna,

I suggest that more people think like you!

Strangely, food is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of less packaging. My favorite way to [...]

I’m dreaming of a green Christmas

No matter how snowy it is where you live, you can have a green Christmas — even though the season is rife with over-consumption. Each year in the U.S., approximately $75 billion is spent on Christmas gifts, 1.9 billion cards are sent and 20.8 million trees are cut. This year, [...]
