A Greener Indiana

Everybody can do something to make a greener Indiana

2014 Eby's Pines Sustainability efforts

2014 Eby’s Green Report

Eby’s Pines Campground and RV Resort, www.EbysPines.com  has been in operation for over 46 years.  We are nestled amongst the pines between Bonneyville Mills County Park, and the Little Elkhart River; located in the heart of Northern Indiana Amish Country.  We have over 300 sites including several electric- water and full hook up connections, cabin rentals, and primitive camp sites.  We have ample space for larger gatherings among our 40+ acre facility, as well as 2 pavilions available for rent.  We generate a good bit of trash and electricity and have many acres of grounds to maintain.

Our customers care deeply about the environment and so do we.

We have always tried to be good stewards of the environment, dating back many years ago, beginning with the founder of Eby’s Pines, Harry Eby and his soil conservation efforts.  In the last few years our environmental awareness has grown and we have made efforts to change many of our practices with in the RV Park.

We have made a concerted effort to continue to move our park toward becoming a greener, more environmental friendly establishment.  Some of the ways we are addressing these issues are:

-           Providing recycling facilities in a centrally located position in the park.  The recycling program we have chosen allows for plastics, cardboard, cans, and paper products.  There is no need to separate these products they may all conveniently be placed in the same recycling container.   Our hope is that our customers will also join in our efforts to reduce the amount of waste being sent to the landfill by choosing to use the facilities provided.

-           We have switched to water saving shower heads

-          We have installed automatic no touch faucets, and waterless urinals.

-          A new outdoor privy with hand sanitation dispensers was added last year.

All of these changes will assist in reducing the amount of water being used in the park.  An electric charging station has been installed and we will be renting and encouraging the use of environmentally friendly electric golf carts, in return reducing the amount of pollutants being released into the air.

As for lighting, we have switched to sodium vapor and compact fluorescent lighting throughout the park including our cabin rentals, bathroom facilities and our camp store.

Our most recent accomplishment in our park has been the construction of The Comfy Cottage.  Our cottage is unique in the fact that it is constructed of recycled timbers taken from the park.  These logs were cut from Eby’s and delivered to a local mill to be prepared for the construction of The Comfy Cottage.   This new cottage is equipped with a high efficiency electric heat pump and a/c, an on demand hot water heater and uses compact fluorescent lighting.

In the future we will continue to examine our business and try to do more to help reduce our impact on the environment.  Just a few simple changes can make a world of difference.
