Cara,
I take dried lavendar buds, (from your garden or any health food store) and pour plain white vinegar over them. Make sure it is a glass container (canning jars are great), then place somewhere sunny and let "brew". I cover the top with plastic wrap and then the lids so the vinegar doesn't rust. When it gets to the desired scent just strain back into the original vinegar container. I was worried about the purple color staining my clothes but it as long as you don't pour it directly on the clothes its fine. I have a front loader washer and everything goes in at the top. Let me know how you like it.

I have used Seventh Generation also for years. I use the Free and Clear and add 1 cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle. This eliminates the need for fabric softener. I make a scented vinegar with lavendar and it is great for sheets in the summer when they are hung to dry. Doesn't take much to fall asleep after that.

Cara - Here is the recipe. If you try it and it doesn't work well let me know. My wife didn't have the best lof uck the first time, but now she is a pro!

Homemade Laundry Detergent:

1/3 bar fels naphtha
1/2 c washing soda
1/2 c Borax
2 gal distilled water

Grate the soap (cheese grater) and put it in a pot with 6 cups of water over medium heat. Heat until the soap melts. Add washing soda and Borax until dissolved. Let set for 5 minutes over medium heat stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let it set for 5 minutes. Using a funnel, put equal amounts in 2 gallon jugs. fill each jug with warm distilled water. Let the soap set for 24 hours.

My wife makes her own laundry detergent that seems to work great. It definitely cuts back on the amount plastic containers we consume. Let me know if you are interested in how she makes it.

We have used 7th generation laundry detergent for many years and it works well and it about the same price as tide. It is on sale at krogers.
